Who should apply?

Trade union agreements usually specify whether you should pay your employee salary during their parental leave. You might be required to pay for the entirety of the leave, for some of the leave or not at all. This determines who is responsible for sending the application to Barsilsskipanin. See below.

  • If you pay your employee salary for the entirety of their parental leave, you should apply for parental allowance for the entirety of the leave. The employee does not have to make an application.
  • If you pay your employee salary for a part of their parental leave, you should only apply for parental allowance for the period when you pay salary. The employee is responsible for applying for the period when they do not get a salary.
  • If you do not pay your employee for their parental leave, your employee must apply for parental allowance for the entirety of their leave. In this case, you should not apply for parental allowance at all.

Not certain?

If you are uncertain about whether you are supposed to pay your employees salary during their parental leave, you should ask your trade union. Barsilsskipanin does not advise on these matters.
